The official launch of Limerick City Civil Defence's Bicycle Unit took place on Saturday, 23rd May, 2009.

Present at the launch were His Worship, The Mayor: Cllr. John Gilligan, the Director General of Civil Defence: Bill Smith, the Chairman of the Civil Defence Board: Joe Meagher, the Limerick City Council Director of Service (Emergency Services): Caroline Curley, the Limerick City Civil Defence Officer: Ms. Cecilia O'Flaherty and the volunteers.
