Archive: National Literacy Awareness Week 2003
A recent international study found that 500,000 Irish adults, from a wide variety of backgrounds, have very low levels of literacy. Some people have difficulty with fairly straightforward tasks like reading the label on a medicine bottle, helping their children with homework or filling in forms.
In order to raise awareness of these issues and to mark National Literacy Awareness Week, a representative from the Adult Literacy Service of Limerick VEC will be available at an information stand at the canteen on September 23rd and 24th from 10am-12 noon to offer information and advice on a range of topics including:
- How to identify and support someone with reading and writing difficulties,
- The options open to individuals who have literacy difficulties
- The range of services provided by the VEC.
Workshops are also being held with identified staff over the coming weeks. For further information contact Orla in the Social Inclusion Unit on 407257.
