Commencement Notice for Development
Brief Explanatory Note
Commencement Notices are required for the following development:
- The erection of a building
- The material alteration or extension of a building.
- Material change of use of a building.
To ensure that the Commencement Notice is valid, the Notice must be submitted to the Building Control Authority -(Limerick City Council, Fire Prevention and Building Control Section):
- Not less than fourteen days and not more than twenty eight days before commencement of work or the making of a 'material change of use'
- Accompanied by the correct fee. (See below).
- On the prescribed form that is fully completed

Commencement Notice Fees
Commencement Notice Fees are:
€30 or where the proposed works or material change of use relate to more than one building, €30 per building. Examples:
- 2 adjoining terraced houses are taken to be 2 buildings.
- A block of apartments is taken to be one building.
Fee for dispensation from or relaxation of
Fee for dispensation from or relaxation of commencement notice requirement is:
- €125 for a domestic dwelling.
- €250 for a commercial development
The correct fee must be submitted with the Commencement Notice, otherwise the Notice is deemed to be invalid.
